Welcome to Dirty Nowhere
Well I’ve officially left for Indianapolis. I spent the night in Vegas. I’ve actually never stayed in a hotel here, but Circus Circus was $28 a night so I thought it would be a cheap spot to stay so I can make my next destination today. I’ve remembered why I’m not a big fan of casinos and their hotels. It’s the smell. My room smell’s like a 90 year old chain smoker lived here their whole life.
Tack on Vegas is in the middle of nowhere. The strip isn’t even that long. Frank Sinatra is dead. Someone please help me out…why do people by the millions go to the middle nowhere, to reek like Marlboro Lights, and wait in longs lines to check into a hotel where Frank Sinatra doesn’t sing? Am I missing something?

First…you have to understand the casino/party area of Vegas is sort of divided into old casinos (where Circus Circus & Sahara are), new casinos (Wynn, Aria, etc), downtown (Gold Nugget, Freemont Experience, etc) and the casinos on the outskirts (Rio, Palms, etc). All of which are very different and offer various levels of perks and amenities…and people types (was that politically correct enough?).
Although, a ton of folks go just because of the pure debauchery (don’t get to use that word often)…they are a ton of family things to do. Brooklyn loves the Shark Exhibit at Mandalay Bay and the M&M store. They are a ton of shows (Lion King, Jersey Boys, Mama Mia, etc) and concerts too. Also, there’s some great golfing. as far as Circus Circus goes…well, you get what you pay for. Stayed there one year while at N.A.B. convention…it was horrible.
Not a huge fan of Vegas, but it’s a nice getaway for us L.A. folks who aren’t flying to Europe for the weekend anytime soon.
Kate and Josh – you guys make it seem like paradise! LOL. But don’t they have the same dirty stank smell in EVERY casino in Vegas? I don’t even want to walk to the lobby…I’m afraid I’ll get that contagious, smoky, B.O. smell like in that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry’s car reeked! I think you’re both wrong…I think people come here to get rich quick and they’re addicted to the adrenaline rush! Although, maybe I should have just stayed in a different hotel.
What do others think?

Josh, the better the hotel, the better the ventilation system (my wife who has asthma can attest). There are a bunch of hotels that don’t even have casinos. I agree that the demographic at Circus Circus are probably trying to get rich quick off the nickel slots, but most folks there are just looking for a good time…and that’s different for everyone. Vegas gets a bad rap because of all the partying, but I don’t even really gamble, drink or smoke (much) and I’ve had a great time there numerous times. It really is just what you make it. And, as far as adrenaline rushes are concerned…living in L.A. takes care of that just fine.

Thanks Josh! You are convincing me a little bit to not write Vegas off so quickly. Although I’m still glad to be leaving today!

Hey Josh, I went to Vegas once when I was 16 or 17, I can’t quite remember. My family went to visit my grandparents who lived there for about a year. We didn’t stay at one of the hotels, so I can’t speak for them. The experience was ok. The thing I enjoyed the most was the food buffet at Sam’s Town. That was the only casino I ever set foot in. The food was amazing yet cheap. We also saw the Bellagio, Volcano, and Pirates. The only other thing we would have seen would be the white tigers, but we didn’t. The people there all seem to have there own agendas. I didn’t like the fact that there were nightclubs everywhere. It’s like sunset blvd. here in LA only a 100 times worse. Honestly, the only reason I can think of as to why people go there all the time is because they like to gamble, drink, and break other commandments. I’ve heard gambling is just as addictive as smoking. I mean, there’s a reason God said money is the root of all evil. Another thing too, and I think it’s not as significant, is that it’s a cultural thing here in the US to go to Vegas and “have a good time.” People who are party freaks are the most susceptible to go.
I’m with you Hussman. Everything cost. Those nice hotel rooms are $200+ a night. You cant find a black jack table for under $20. And even the best air conditioning system still can’t get rid of second hand smoke. The thing I hate the worst is when you walk down the street and those guys are yelling at you “hey you look for sex” and try to force a card on you with a naked prostitue on it. They even tried to give it to me or my wife, that really made her mad. It’s probably best to stay away from a place that prides it’s self on being called the city of sin. The last town that called them selves that were sodom and gamora, look how well they did.

Ha ha Josh! Let me remind you that just last year you took the leadership team from the Rising there for a retreat!
Thankfully we didn’t stay at Circus Circus which has a horrible reputation and should be knocked down with a battering ram! There are several luxury hotels along the strip that do not smell at all of smoke and the architecture is beautiful! It’s fun to see the pirate ship sink, the volcano erupt, and ride the gondolas and roller coasters. It’s fun to eat at unique restaurants and watch the fountain show at the Bellagio. There are many family friendly things to do there and if you stay at a decent hotel, the pools are fun and refreshing in that desert sun. Why is it in the middle of nowhere? Don’t ask me, but so is Parker AZ and we went there too!
